Hol Chan Marine Reserve is situated just a few miles off the coast of Ambergris Caye, Belize. It was established to protect the rich marine biodiversity of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second-largest barrier reef in the world. This reserve, spanning approximately 7.8 square miles, offers a sanctuary for a myriad of marine species including turtles, rays, and a wide variety of fish. Hol Chan is divided into four zones, each offering unique experiences: Zone A is a dedicated conservation area surrounding a cut in the reef, perfect for snorkeling and diving; Zone B is Turtle Grass beds, supporting manatees and providing excellent opportunities for wildlife observation; Zone C, Shark Ray Alley, offers thrilling encounters with nurse sharks and stingrays; and Zone D focuses on mangroves and provides critical nursery habitats. The history of Hol Chan is rooted in community conservation efforts, with establishment in 1987 marking Belize’s first marine reserve. Known for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral formations, Hol Chan is a must-visit for snorkelers and divers, offering easy access and unforgettable underwater landscapes.
